CPR Requirements
There are a variety of organizations and providers across the province who provide CPR courses that meet the requirements for NSRDHDTD renewal and initial licences in the practising class. NSRDHDTD CPR requirements are included in the checklists provided with the applications for registration and are provided to NSRDHDTD Registrants through the CPR Information & Courses web page and in their Notice of Expiry annually (re: renewal notice).
The level of CPR certification must include, at a minimum, classroom instruction and practical experience related to:
- one and two-person rescuer chest compressions for adults, children and infants;
- one and two-person rescuer adult, child and infant bag-valve mask technique and rescue breathing;
- relief of choking in adults, children and infants; and
- use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).
To assist you in understanding which CPR meets the list of requirements set by Board, please refer to the attached CPR Requirements document.
Alternative deliveries, such as virtual evaluations completed by instructors using manikins, or other components, (e.g., AEDs) that allow for appropriate evaluation of competencies in the components approved by Council, are considered appropriate methods that meet the requirements for a practicum experience and classroom instruction. An online or in-person theory test must also be included.
All other requirements outlined in the NSRDHDTD Dental Hygiene, Dental Technology, or Denturism CCP Requirements documents must also be met.
Appropriate virtual evaluation of competencies would include options such as an instructor providing the manikins, barrier devices, and AED Trainer to course participants prior to the virtual session. During the virtual evaluation session, the instructor then has the participants demonstrate their ability to successfully complete each of the HCP(BLS)/AED CPR skills by using these manikins, etc. This allows for hands-on practical evaluation, which is a requirement for issuance of certification for HCP or BLS CPR level.
Courses that do not involve physical demonstration and evaluation of the required skills of the student (i.e., hands-on practicum experience) remain unacceptable.
